My kids love my Cinnamon Sugar Bread. The cinnamon swirl featured inside was simply magnificent, yet it couldn’t compare to the crunchy topping that completed this breakfast treat!

After devouring the loaf, which tastes like a churro for breakfast, I thought adding a chocolate twist might be incredible. And it is!

After making this Chocolate Cinnamon Bread, I am half tempted to add a chocolate sauce, but that may put some of you over the top. Or would it?

I love churros, and anything with a crunchy cinnamon topping reminds me of them.

After making this recipe, a wave of nostalgia came over me. I vividly recall living in downtown Denver and walking to Starbucks every morning for a Venti Mocha Latte and, occasionally, Chocolate Cinnamon Bread.

Although it’s been nearly two decades since I last had this treat, one bite of the scrumptious bread instantly brought me back to those fond memories.

  • Cool the loaf pan on a cooling rack for 10 minutes before you remove it to cool on a baking rack. You can serve it immediately or let it cool and serve it later.
  • Substitutions: you can substitute cocoa powder for Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
  • You can easily remove the chocolate chips from this recipe and replace them with cinnamon chips or leave them out entirely.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 4 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 9x5x3” loaf pan and set aside.
  • In a small bowl combine 1/3 cup sugar and 3 teaspoons cinnamon, stir together and set aside.
  • In a medium mixing bowl combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon and remaining 1 cup sugar. Sift together to combine.
  • In a small mixing bowl whisk together egg, milk, oil and vanilla extract. Stir by hand into flour mixture until combined.
  • Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle with half of the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  • Add the remaining batter, using a butter knife swirl batter. Then top with the remaining cinnamon and sugar mixture.
  • Place in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool loaf pan on cooling rack for 10 minutes.
  •  Remove loaf from pan onto a large plate. The loose cinnamon and sugar will come off onto the plate.
    Carefully press all the sides of the bread onto the cinnamon and sugar that comes off onto the plate. Slice and serve.

  3. The ingredient list says 4 tablespoons of cinnamon, but the recipe only uses a tablespoon for the sugar mix and a teaspoon in the batter. Just wanted to point this out cause I’m making this now and thought I messed up at some point.

    1. Sorry for the confusion! It calls for 4 teaspoons which is the right amount. The wording in the instructions was confusing as 1 tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons which is why it said 1 tablespoon used in the sugar mixture. I fixed it just to use teaspoon measurements so that it is more clear. I hope this helps and that you enjoy the bread!
