This Drop Biscuit Recipe is a deliciously simple recipe for biscuits that you will want to serve morning, noon, or night.

These homemade drop biscuits are easy to make as you don’t need a rolling pin or a lot of time to make them. Just mix the batter, scoop, drop on the pan and bake.

Homemade biscuits can’t be beat. I love all biscuits, but this recipe is easy to prepare, making drop biscuits my new favorite. They are downright incredible.

They were a sanity saver for me. Last week, I was cooking at a girls’ camp for about 160 people, and one of the planned meals was my homemade biscuits and gravy. I have the best recipe, and I couldn’t wait to make it for all the campers.

Then, up at camp, I panicked at 3 am; I realized I had forgotten to pack my rolling pins! A must for my biscuit recipe. I lay there feeling frantic. With no way to roll out the dough, I was forced to improvise and made drop biscuits instead.

What is a Drop Biscuit?

Some recipes have you mix and roll out the dough before you cut and bake the biscuits. Drop biscuits are more easy to make because instead of rolling the dough, you drop it by the spoonful into your baking dish.

Unlike traditional biscuits, you don’t have to worry about cutting cold butter or shortening into the dry ingredients. Instead, you only need melted butter that you stir into the dough. It’s so much easier.

The biscuits are made with simple pantry ingredients, including baking powder, which helps them rise and puff up while they bake. They also have some cream of tartar, which gives them a wonderful texture. When done, they are soft and fluffy on the inside and golden brown on the outside.

These are now my favorite biscuits with my country gravy and sausage. They’re also delicious with just a pat of butter or some Nutella (the kids’ preferred topping). They’re just so easy and turn out perfectly every time.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • White sugar
  • Salt
  • Cream of tartar
  • Melted butter
  • Milk

How Do You Make Drop Biscuits?

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add flour, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt, and sift together.
  • Whisk together milk and melted butter into the flour mixture until combined.
  • Drop batter onto a greased 9×13 pan; drop in 3×5 biscuit dough rows. I used 1/3 cup of batter.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for 12-14 minutes or until it is a light golden brown.

How Long Do Biscuits Keep?

I think they are best served warm from the oven, but they will stay at room temperature for a few days. Just be sure to keep them in an airtight container. I like to warm them up and serve them with gravy.

This recipe saved me up at camp, and I’ll make it repeatedly. Soft, tender drop biscuits warm from the oven are such a special treat, especially when they’re so easy to make.

Brushing the tops of the biscuits with melted butter before baking makes them taste even more decadent to me.

  1. I like to make the biscuits even richer by brushing the tops with melted butter before baking. That way you (I mean me really) don’t burn your fingers splitting and buttering them when they are hot (lol).

  2. made these and turned out great. Added a little shredded cheddar to one batch and it was good. Not what I would do each time. maybe some bacon or the like but These are Great biscuits Fast and easy too
