Ingredients

Witch Hats

  • 30 sugar cones
  • 2 cups dark chocolate candy melts like Candy Quick

Sugar Cookies

  • 1 1/4 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup butter
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract we prefer almond
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Frosting

  • 4 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 5 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract we prefer almond
  • 1 teaspoon green food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon green sprinkles optional

Instructions

Witch Hats

  • On your counter, lay out a 2 foot piece of parchment paper.
  • In a microwave safe bowl, melt 1 cup of the dark chocolate candy melts, follow package directions.
  • Pour melted chocolate on top a lunch sized plate, the taking one sugar cone, gently roll it in the chocolate, until all sides are covered. Gently shake off excess chocolate, then turn upside down and rest on parchment paper, make sure that the pointed end is up.
  • Let chocolate harden while you prepare the cookies and frosting.
  • *You can add sprinkles or any decorations while the chocolate is soft, it is fun for the kids to be able to decorate their own witch hat.

Sugar Cookies

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Lightly grease 2 cookie sheets.
  • Cream together sugar and butter. Beat in egg yolks and almond or vanilla extract.
  • Add flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Stir. (Note: dough will be firm, not like your normal cookie dough. Don't worry it is supposed to be this way.)
  • Form dough into walnut size balls and place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Don't flatten. Bake 10 to 11 minutes, until tops are cracked and just turning color.

Frosting

  • In a large bowl, cream together the confectioners' sugar and butter until smooth. Gradually mix in the milk and almond or vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth and stiff, about 5 minutes. Color with food coloring if desired. This makes 3 cups of frosting.
  • Frost cookies, and top with sprinkles and witch hats.
