Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons salted butter plus extra for the pan
  • 9 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 18 ounces marshmallows (mini or regular-sized)
  • red food gel & red food coloring I used both to get the bright colors
  • blue food gel & blue food coloring I used both to get the bright colors

Instructions

  • Butter or line with parchment paper an 8x8" baking pan.
  • To make the marshmallow cream for each layer, have 3 medium microwave-safe bowls and put 6 ounces of marshmallows and two tablespoons of butter in each bowl. Heat one bowl at a time in the microwave for one minute until the marshmallows puff up, being careful not to let them overflow or overcook.
  • Start with the blue food dye. Melt the marshmallows and butter in the microwave for 1 minute, stir together while adding the blue food dye/coloring, and stir until well combined. Add 3 cups of rice krispies and stir with a spatula until all the cereal is well coated. Press into an 8x8 or 9x9 baking pan.
  • To make the white layer, melt the marshmallows and butter in the microwave for 1 minute, stir together, add 3 cups of rice krispies, and stir with a rubber spatula until all the cereal is well coated. Add on top of the blue layer in the baking pan and press down to smooth it out.
  • Now make the red layer. Melt the marshmallows and butter in the microwave for 1 minute, stir together add the red food dye/coloring, and stir until well combined. Add 3 cups of rice krispies and stir with a spatula until all the cereal is well coated. Add on top of the white layer in the baking pan and press down to smooth it out.
  • Decorate with drizzled white melting chocolate and sprinkles, or leave just as is; either way, this classic treat is just as delicious as the original, just a little more festive.
Cut the bars one they have cooled.
