This Triple Chocolate Cake is a rich, fudge-like chocolate cake with chocolate chips and topped with a chocolate frosting. It is a chocolate lovers dream.
My mom was never much of a cook but that she loves to bake. Every holiday season she pulled us girls into the kitchen and we would make cookies, cakes, and bread. She had her one to-go-to cake and that was this Triple Chocolate Cake.
Her secret to making this cake so easy was the cake mix as a base and the secret to making it extra delicious and fudge-like was the instant pudding. She never really frosted it – that I remember but I have this chocolate frosting from my Triple Chocolate Pumpkin Cake that is to die for and so of course I frosted my mom’s delicious cake with it. Making this cake almost sinful.
I decided to make this cake because I am celebrating a new phase in my life. After two days of crying too many tears, I decided to break out the cake and move forward and welcome this time of my life. For the last 13-years all I have known is being a stay-at-home mom and watching some of my friends kids. So the last 13-years of my life have been centered around getting the young ones to school, preschool in particular.
Even as the kids got older, I still have always had one at home that went to 1/2 day preschool and I loved that. I loved having them home with me. Well this past Wednesday my youngest went to his last day of preschool and I was a hot mess. {Cannon left with his teachers, Miss Kathi and Miss Karen – the best preschool teachers EVER!}
Of course, I am happy. But my heart is a little broken. The stage in life that I have known and loved came to a bitter-sweet ending. I have always had people say to me “it goes by fast” and I was never, ever offended by that but I was always like “umm…okay”. Some days I’ll be honest didn’t feel that way but for the most part I thought I understood. But oh, I didn’t. I look back and think how did it all go that quickly? And while I welcome my stage in life with open arms. I still am trying to tightly hold on to what was.
So give me a little time, some cake and a lot of hugs and soon you won’t see a tear when I talk about my babies all being in elementary and middle school. But trust me that won’t be any time soon.
Enjoy this stage in life, my friends, it goes by all too quickly.
XOXO San
How do you make Triple Chocolate Cake?
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease and flour a bundt pan and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl mix together all of the dry ingredients: cake mix, pudding, and flour.
Beat in water, milk, eggs, and vanilla5 until smooth.
Stir in 12-ounce bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Pour into prepared bundt pan for 50-55 minutes until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cook cake for 15 minutes on cooling rack, then turn cake over on cake plate or stand. Top with powdered sugar (what my mom does) or prepare chocolate frosting.
In a double boiler over medium heat combine butter, chocolate chips, and corn syrup. Stir until completely melted and well incorporated. Drizzle over cake and sprinkle with mini-chocolate chips, sprinkled or just devour.

I see oil in the instructions, but not the recipe?
Jennie – great catch. Not sure why I listed oil. That is not in the recipe.
Enjoy!

I just made this cake. I’m pretty sure it needs oil or butter. It is dry and didn’t rise any. There is no moisture to it. Do you mind double checking? I followed the recipe exactly as stated and mine looks nothing like your picture. Thanks
No need oil could be better. These look so awesome with all those beautiful textures and flavors!!
