Chocolate Churro Muddy Buddies – a collision of your classic Muddy Buddies & churros making the best cinnamon & sugar bite-sized treat.
I am obsessed with these Chocolate Churro Muddy Buddies for two reasons. One, because I love churros, second, because I love this chocolate ganache that coats the outside of the cereal.
While your classic Muddy Buddy has a coating of chocolate & peanut butter, these have a simple ganache instead. Just butter and chocolate – pretty much food divinity.
I think that Muddy Buddies (or Puppy Chow as I grew up calling it) is the best & easiest summer treat. For one, it is a no-bake recipe, two, it is ready in minutes, and lastly every time I make them the entire batch is quickly devoured making this a real crowd-pleaser. Whether we are headed to the pool, camping or just having a barbecue I love to whip up a batch of Muddy Buddies as do my kiddos {this is a treat they can now make on their own too}.
So what inspired this recipe for Chocolate Churro Muddy Buddies? Well, I love, love, love churros. They are delicious at a ball game, carnival, or even at Sam’s Club. I like making them from scratch; I could make my Pumpkin Churros with Chocolate Dipping Sauce EVERY-SINGLE-DAY! Friends, this is the recipe inspired these Chocolate Churro Muddy Buddies.
This bite-sized snack has all the elements of a churro as it’s crunchy and covered in cinnamon & sugar. So while you may just love the traditional Muddy Buddies as we do, you seriously need to try these Chocolate Churro Muddy Buddies. They quickly became one of our favorites and something we make consistently all summer. How do you make Chocolate Churro Muddy Buddies?
- In a small bowl add powder sugar, brown sugar, white granulated sugar and cinnamon, set aside.
- Add chocolate chips & 4 tablespoons of butter into a small bowl and melt together by heating in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between. This usually takes me 1 – 1 1/2 minutes.
- Stir until completely melted and smooth.
- Add cereal into a large bowl, set aside.
- Pour chocolate over cereal and stir until cereal is completely coated.
- Once coated pour sugar mixture on top and mixture together to coat the chocolate covered cereal.
- Once completely covered add an additional teaspoon of cinnamon on top of cereal and stir together one more time.
- Serve immediately or store in the Ziplock bag for later.
- We love to keep ours stored in the fridge but on the counter works too!

Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 9 cups Chex cereal
- 4 tablespoons butter + 1-2 tablespoon extra if needed, read note below
- 1 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon for topping, optional
Instructions
- In a small bowl add powdered sugar, brown sugar, white granulated sugar, and cinnamon; set aside.
- Add chocolate chips & 4 tablespoons of butter in a small heat-safe bowl and melt in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between. This takes me about 1 – 1 1/2 minutes usually.
- NOTE – depending on the chocolate and/or your microwave the chocolate might be a little chunky and not smooth from cooking too long or too high of heat. Don’t worry! After a minute of heating, stir in an additional tablespoon of melted butter and stir well into the chocolate. Use an additional tablespoon if needed.
- Add cereal into a large bowl, set aside.
- Pour chocolate over cereal and stir until cereal is completely coated. Once coated, pour sugar mixture on top and mixture together to coat the chocolate covered cereal.
- Once completely covered add an additional teaspoon of cinnamon on top of cereal and stir together one more time.
