How to shred chicken

Chicken is easiest to shred when it is still warm but cool enough to handle. There are three ways to shred chicken, each method has its benefits, so choose the one that works best for your recipe and preferences.

  1. Using two forks to pull the meat apart.
  2. Place the chicken in a stand mixer on low speed. (My preferred method.)
  3. Use your hands to tear it into pieces.

How to store shredded chicken

To refrigerate, put the shredded chicken in a sealed container, add a quarter cup of cooking liquid for every 4 cups of chicken, and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

To freeze, put the ingredients into gallon ziplock bags, add the cooking liquid, press out any air, and stash in the freezer for up to 2 months. Defrost in the fridge overnight.
