How to Make Christmas Candy Bark

  • Prepare Toppings: Crush candy canes, chop nuts, and gather other toppings you plan to use.
  • Melt Chocolate: Break the chocolate into smaller pieces and melt it using a double boiler or microwave, stirring occasionally until smooth.
  • Spread Chocolate: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pour the melted chocolate onto the parchment paper and spread it into a thin, even layer using a spatula.
  • Add Toppings: While the chocolate is still warm, sprinkle your assorted toppings evenly over the melted chocolate, pressing them slightly into the chocolate.
  • Set: Let the bark sit at room temperature or place it in the refrigerator for around 30 minutes to 1 hour until completely set and firm.
  • Break Into Pieces: Once set, break the bark into irregular pieces using your hands or a knife.

How to Store candy bark

When you store candy bark properly, you can enjoy it for a long time or even give it as a homemade gift during the holiday season! So go ahead and savor every delicious bite!

Airtight Container: Just pop the candy bark in airtight container and separate the layers with parchment or wax paper. This way, they won’t stick together and you’ll preserve their unique flavors and textures.

Room Temperature: If your home isn’t too warm, you can just leave the candy bark at room temperature in a cool, dry spot for up to 2 weeks. Just make sure it’s away from direct sunlight or anything that might give off heat.

Refrigeration: If you’re in a warmer climate or if the bark has yummy toppings like fresh fruit or dairy, you might want to pop it in the fridge. That way, it’ll stay good for about 3 to 4 weeks and last even longer. Just remember to let it come to room temperature before serving so it gets back its intended texture.

Freezing: Candy bark freezes really well! To keep it fresh, just wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container before popping it in the freezer. It stays delicious for about 2 to 3 months. When you’re ready to treat yourself, just let it thaw in the fridge or at room temperature.

Separation: If you’re keeping different flavored barks together, make sure to separate them in the container so the flavors don’t mix.

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your Christmas candy bark toppings. You can use crushed pretzels, dried fruits like cranberries or cherries, sprinkles, crushed cookies, or even bacon for a sweet and savory twist. The possibilities are endless!

  • 7 ounces Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate Bars
  • 7 ounces Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet or Dark Chocolate Bars
  • crushed Candy Canes
  • mini candy canes
  • Christmas sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 225 degrees.
  • Line the baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay chocolate in a single layer on the parchment paper.
  • I break up the chocolate to mix the flavors and allow for easy swirling. You can do this however you would like.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes. Checking on the chocolate every five minutes or so. Chocolates take various times to melt, dark chocolate being the longest.
  • Once the chocolate is almost completely melted, take the baking sheet out of the oven.
  • Immediately swirl the chocolate using the end of a butter knife or small cereal spoon. Some chocolate holds its shape when fully melted, it still needs to be swirled to break down completely.
  • *Don't wait for the chocolate to look smooth in the oven – that can cause overheating and burning. Once you remove it from the oven, the residual heat will finish the melting process.
  • Top with crushed candy canes, mini candy canes, Christmas sprinkles, and any other Christmas candy or cookies you want to add to the bark.
  • Stick in the fridge and allow the candy to harden. Break up the chocolate and store it in an airtight container in the fridge.
