This Drop Biscuit Recipe is a deliciously simple recipe for biscuits that you will want to serve morning, noon or night.
These homemade drop biscuits are easy to make and even easier to eat. Plus, you don’t need a rolling pin or a lot of time to make them.
Homemade biscuits can’t be beat. I love all biscuits but this particular recipe is easy to prepare, making drop biscuits my new favorite kind to make. They are downright amazing.
They were literally a sanity saver for me. Last week I was up cooking at a Girl’s Camp for about 160 people and one of the meals I had planned was my homemade biscuits and gravy. I have the best recipe and I couldn’t wait to make it for all the campers.
Then up at camp, I woke up at 3 am in a panic, I realized I had forgotten to pack my rolling pins! A must for my biscuit recipe. I laid there frantic. With no way to roll out the dough, I was forced to improvise and made drop biscuits instead.
What is a Drop Biscuit?
Some recipes have you mix and roll out the dough before you cut and bake the biscuits. Drop biscuits are easier to make because instead of rolling the dough, you simply drop it by the spoonful into your baking dish.
Unlike traditional biscuits, you don’t have to worry about cutting cold butter or shortening into the dry ingredients. Instead, you only need melted butter that you stir into the dough. It’s so much easier.
The biscuits are made with simple pantry ingredients including baking powder which is what helps them rise and puff up while they bake. They also have some cream of tartar which gives them a wonderful texture. When done, they are soft and fluffy on the inside and golden brown on the outside.
These are now my favorite biscuits to serve with my country gravy and sausage. They’re also delicious with just a pat of butter or some Nutella (the kids’ preferred topping). They’re just so easy and turn out perfectly every time.
Ingredients
I bet if you check you might have everything on hand to make a batch. You only need a few simple pantry ingredients.
- All-purpose flour
- Baking powder
- White sugar
- Cream of tartar
- Salt
- Melted butter
- Milk
How Do You Make Drop Biscuits?
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
- In a large mixing bowl add flour, baking powder, cream of tartar and salt, sift together.
- Whisk together milk and melted butter and mix into flour mixture until combined.
- Drop batter onto a greased cookie sheet, I used 1/3 cup of batter.
- Bake in preheated oven for 12-14 minutes or until a light golden brown.
How Long Do They Keep?
I think they are best served warm from the oven, but they will keep for a few days at room temperature. Just be sure to keep them in an airtight container. I like to warm up them up and serve them with gravy.
This recipe saved me up at camp and it’s one I’ll make again and again. Soft, tender drop biscuits warm from the oven are such a special treat especially when they’re so easy to make. XOXO San

do you have the recipe for country gravy?
Didn’t see the country gravy recipe today. Maybe I missed it.
I like to make the biscuits even richer by brushing the tops with melted butter before baking. That way you (I mean me really) don’t burn your fingers splitting and buttering them when they are hot (lol).
