We are firing up the grill for the summer, and I will be sharing some of our favorite family recipes.
This Grilled Salmon recipe is my boys’ favorite recipe for salmon. Marinated in a teriyaki sauce, wrapped in aluminum foil and thrown on the grill, this recipe is simple, easy and delicious.

I personally love it because we all get to enjoy salmon without the smell of fish lingering in the house for hours.
I also love that salmon can really be served with any sides. We love the traditional side of asparagus, which we grill at the same time as the salmon, making this meal ready in less than 25 minutes!
I love my local Safeway and all the produce options they have, including ready-made veggie trays, salads, salsa (including my personal favorite mango salsa) and fresh squash noodles, which I made into a simple salad to serve with our salmon.

While I have never been a huge fan of salmon – mainly because I didn’t have much seafood growing up – since marrying my husband, I have learned that you can cook fish in a variety of ways and find the type of fish and seasoning you like. So for me, I am all about adding a teriyaki glaze. This is my favorite way to prepare and eat salmon!
Salmon Selection
Safeway has a full-service fresh seafood counter which was incredibly helpful when it came to picking out the best piece of Sockeye Salmon for dinner. The on-site butcher was extremely welcoming and gave her suggestion; she also spoke to her personal favorites and gave some ideas for grilling.
Safeway also offers a variety of fresh fish and seasonal seafood all year. Another nice benefit from getting your seafood from them is that you can special order in advance what you would like, which comes in handy for the busy holiday seasons, including the Fourth of July.
While Safeway had a variety of salmon to pick from, I went with Sockeye Salmon because of its deep red color and the fact that it stands up well when grilling.
I will note that Sockeye traditionally is oilier. Therefore, it has a stronger flavor. If you are looking for a more mild flavor, I would talk with the butcher. Sockeye, like most salmon, is rich in omega-3s. This is a heart-healthy choice of protein for grilling.

How to grill salmon.
There are two ways to grill salmon.
Direct grilling where you grill the salmon directly on the metal grates on your grill. To do this, I would spray down your grates with cooking oil to avoid the salmon sticking to the grill. Heat grill to 350°F to 375°F and cook 3-5 minutes per side, salmon will be completely cooked once the fish begins to flake when pulling it with a fork.
Foil “Pack” grilling is my preferred method for grilling salmon because it doesn’t stick to the grates, and I feel that it cooks more evenly.
- Preheat your grill to 375°F.
- Season fish lightly with salt and pepper and add to Ziploc bag. Add in your choice of marinade – I went with Safeway’s Signature Selection Island Teryaki Sauce. It is fantastic! Set in the refrigerator and let it marinate up to an hour.
- On a sheet pan, add 2-3 layers of foil, make sure each foil sheet is long enough to wrap up your fish. I cook two filets side by side in the same piece of foil.
- Seal the foil “packet”, set on the preheated grill and grill for about 13-18 minutes. Tip: Check your salmon 8-10 minutes into grilling, as each grill varies in temperature and you’ll want to make sure not to overcook your fish!

Side Dishes to Serve With Salmon

- Pick up a fresh salad, salsa or veggies/fruit tray from Safeway.
- Asparagus (grilled or oven-roasted)
- Green Salad
- Fruit Salad
- Potato Salad
- And don’t forget dessert! Cherry Garcia Ice Cream would be a big hit!

Teriyaki Drizzle
- 1/2 cup Signature Selection Island Teriyaki Sauce
Instructions
- Preheat your grill to 375°F.
- Season fish lightly with salt and pepper and add to Ziploc bag. Add your choice of marinade. I went with Safeway's Signature Selection Island Teryaki Sauce. It is fantastic! Set in the refrigerator and let it marinate up to an hour.

Teriyaki Drizzle
- To add a glaze on your fish after it is done cooking, add 1/2 cup of the teriyaki sauce to a small sauce pan and cook on medium/high on the stove top until it starts to thicken – about 8-12 minutes. Stir often to make sure it isn't burning to the bottom of the pan.
