My family was amazed by how much they loved this dish, and it has now become a part of our go-to recipes. Serve this chicken recipe with delicious sides like mashed potatoes, rolls, and salad, you have a complete meal. I got the idea for the twist on this recipe from my Slow Cooker French Onion Pork Chops.

Ready in under 30 minutes, this meal is perfect for a busy weekday night. In addition an ideal comfort food meal to cook on a relaxing Sunday evening.

What if I don’t have French Onion Soup mix on hand?

  • Granted that having the soup mix will simplify this recipe; alternatively you can make your own soup mix by following the recipe linked here.
  • Of course you can just run to the store and pick some up.

This recipe for French Onion Chicken has turned our favorite soup into a complete meal. Full of chicken, butter, onions, and cheese and has the same taste as the classic recipe but is elevated with protein.

This recipe is sauteed chicken breasts smothered in a creamy french onion sauce and topped with light cheese – it’s become a family favorite.

how to make skillet french onion chicken

First, in a large skillet melt the butter and add the sliced onions over medium-high heat. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Second, cook the onions for 2-3 minutes, then add the olive oil and chicken. Add the french onion soup pack to coat the chicken. Furthermore continue to cook the chicken until it is no longer pink in the center, stirring occasionally.

Third, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and beef broth. At this point, once the chicken is just barely cooked all the way through, about 5-6 minutes, add the broth and soup mixture.

Finally, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 4-6 minutes.

Next, turn off the heat and top with shredded cheese, cover, and let it sit for minutes or until the cheese has completely melted. Lastly, remove the lid and top with fresh parsley before you serve.

Ingredients
 

  • 1 yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • 1 packet french onion soup mix
  • 1 can cream of mushroom
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions
 

  • Over medium-high heat, in a large skillet melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Cook the onions for 2-3 minutes, then add the olive oil and chicken. Add the french onion soup pack to coat the chicken. Continue cooking until the chicken is no longer pink in the center, stirring occasionally.
