Ingredients for French Onion Chicken

Meat, cheese, onions, beef broth, mushroom soup, and butter are the primary ingredients. And the wonderful thing is you probably have most of the ingredients on hand in your pantry.

  • 1 yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • 1 packet french onion soup mix
  • 1 can cream of mushroom
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

What if I don’t have French Onion Soup mix on hand?

Granted that having the soup mix will simplify this recipe. While you can make your own soup mix by following the recipe linked here. Of course you can just run to the store and pick some up.

How to Make French Onion Chicken

Let’s get started! Sauteed chicken breasts smothered in a creamy french onion sauce and topped with light cheese- it’s become a family favorite. YUM!

First, in a large skillet melt the butter and add the sliced onions over medium-high heat. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Second, cook the onions for 2-3 minutes, then add the olive oil and chicken. Add the french onion soup pack to coat the chicken. Furthermore continue to cook the chicken until it is no longer pink in the center, stirring occasionally.

Third, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and beef broth. At this point, once the chicken is just barely cooked all the way through, about 5-6 minutes, add the broth and soup mixture.

Finally, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 4-6 minutes.

Next, turn off the heat and top with shredded cheese, cover, and let it sit for minutes or until the cheese has completely melted. Lastly, remove the lid and top with fresh parsley before you serve.
