These Chocolate Biscuits make breakfast more like dessert. Top with whipped cream and you’ll have a perfect treat.
These chocolate biscuits are flaky, buttery and chocolatey – a wonderful twist on a traditional biscuit recipe. I love one with a pat of butter, but they also make the best chocolate strawberry shortcake dessert. So it’s recipe for breakfast and dessert – what’s better than that?

The first time I made chocolate biscuits was for breakfast – I remember it was spring break, the kids were all home, and we had this fun breakfast in the middle of the week. Needless to say, they were a hit – flaky biscuits made with chocolate? Yum. Oh, and some fresh strawberries and whipped cream didn’t hurt either.
The chocolate biscuits actually sparked a debate among them. What is the best breakfast treat? As much as they loved these flaky biscuits they all agreed that crepes are still their favorite. I had to laugh and say, oh well, I’m just glad these chocolate biscuits are a good second place breakfast!
My favorite thing about this recipe is that you can serve it in many ways – I love that! They are a great treat, perfect for a tea party, brunch, breakfast, or even dessert, which might be my favorite. The biscuits make the best chocolate strawberry shortcake.
They are as easy to make as my savory biscuits like Copycat KFC Biscuits or Italian Herb Biscuits but sweet with the addition of chocolate.
They are wonderful with just a smear of butter and honey or pair them with any fruit topping or Greek yogurt. Serve them with eggs and béchamel sauce and you’ll have a brunch better than any fancy restaurant.

Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- Baking powder
- Granulated sugar
- Unsweetened cocoa powder
- Cream of tartar
- Sea salt
- Cold butter
- Milk
How do you make Chocolate Biscuits?
Preheat the oven to 415 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium mixing bowl sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar, and sea salt.
Using a pastry blender, your hands, or a knife and fork, cut in the butter into the dry ingredients until the flour resembles coarse crumbs.
Add the milk to the flour mixture and stir with a fork until the mixture comes together. On a lightly floured surface pull out the dough and knead until it is smooth.

Dust the countertop or surface you will roll out the dough on with cocoa powder. Then roll out the dough until it is 1/2 inch thick. Cut out dough using a 3-inch biscuit cutter, or you can cut it into squares.
With remaining dough, reform and roll out to 1/2 inch and repeat until all the dough is used and made into biscuits.
Arrange biscuit dough on a prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until risen.
Serve immediately, or set on the counter or serving dish until ready to serve.
