This Best Ever 5-Minute Salsa is easy to make yet delicious salsa. This simple salsa recipe is our favorite with tacos, just as a dip or over nachos.
My dad has always been in charge of making the salsa for family gatherings because he always made it the best. Then he started tweaking it a couple of years ago, and we were all like, What is going on?
Dad- never mess with a good thing. So we asked him for his recipe, and he told us that he just throws together a few things, and that’s it. Jalapenos, tomato sauce, cilantro, and white onion. Then he would season to taste.
My Favorite Kitchen Tools To Make This Recipe
From trusty pots and pans to handy gadgets, I’ve curated a list of products I use and love.
So I went home and made it exactly how he made it. He didn’t use a blender; he used a food processor instead. I liked that because I love bits of onion and cilantro. And I liked that he uses tomato sauce because I always have that on hand.
I took over salsa duty. We still love it when he makes it, but remind him not to overcomplicate it. Let’s say my dad LOVES garlic, LOVES! If you also love garlic, add some when you chop the onion; a clove won’t hurt but don’t use the entire head of garlic.
What to serve with homemade salsa
Since I still have five little kids who hate spicy food, we leave out the jalapeno. But if we have more adult guests for dinner, I make one jar with jalapeno and another without. Therefore, anyone who wants the traditional heat of jalapenos has it available.
So try this salsa for your next taco night, big game day get-together or as an afternoon snack. Enjoy from my dad’s salsa bowl to yours.

Best Ever 5-Minute Salsa
Ingredients
- 1/2 large white onion
- small bunch of cilantro bottom half cut off and thrown out
- 1-2 small jalapenos (optional) stem and seeds removed, if you want some HOT heat leave the seeds
- 28 ounce can tomato sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Cut in half a large white onion, remove skin and chop into large chunks.
- Add to a food processor. Add cilantro and jalapeno, if you are using, to the food processor and use the chop setting on your processor.
- Run the food processor until the cilantro, onion, and jalapeno are finely chopped.
- If you don’t want to use the food processor, that is just fine! Finely dice the onion, cilantro, and jalapeno on your own.
- Add cilantro and onion mixture to a large mason jar, I use a quart size (32 ounces).
- Pour the tomato sauce until it reaches about an inch from the top.
- Add seasonings, salt, cumin, and chili powder.
- Screw on the mason jar lid and shake until well combined. Use immediately or let it sit in the refrigerator until ready to use.
- Enjoy!
Hey San!! In the ingredients it says 1/2 large white tomato? Is that supposed to read onion?
LOL! Yes, thanks for catching that.
