This Best Ever 5-Minute Salsa is easy to make yet delicious salsa. It is perfect on tacos, or as a snack with your favorite chips.
This simple salsa recipe is hands-down our favorite. Sometimes to switch it up I’ll make another kind, like these: Mango Salsa, Salsa Verde, and Smoky Roasted Salsa. These are all great for dipping or with your favorite tacos.
My dad has always been in charge of making the salsa for family gatherings because he always made it the best. Then a couple of years ago he started tweaking it and we were all like that is going on? Dad- never ever mess with a good thing. So we asked him for his recipe and he told us that really he just throws together a few things and that’s it. Jalapenos, tomato sauce, cilantro, and white onion. Then he would season to taste.
So I went home and made it exactly how he made it. He didn’t use a blender, he used a food processor instead. I liked that because I love bits of onion and cilantro. And I liked that he uses tomato sauce because I always have that on hand.
Needless to say, I took over salsa duty. Actually, we still love it when he makes it but we just remind him not to overcomplicate it. Let’s just say my dad LOVES garlic, LOVES! While if you love garlic as well, add some when you chop the onion, I clove won’t hurt but don’t use the entire head of garlic.
Since I still have 5 little kids that hate spicy food, we leave out the jalapeno. But if we are having more adult guests for dinner, then I make one jar with jalapeno and another without. Therefore, anyone who wants the traditional heat of jalapenos, they have it available.
So try this salsa for your next taco night, big game day get-together or as an afternoon snack.
Enjoy from my dad’s salsa bowl to yours. XOXO San
How do you make 5-Minute Salsa?
- Cut in half a large white onion, remove skin and chop into large chunks.
- Add to a food processor. Add cilantro and jalapeno, if you are using, to the food processor and use the chop setting on your processor
- Run the food processor until the cilantro, onion, and jalapeno are finely chopped.
- If you don’t want to use the food processor, that is just fine! Finely dice the onion, cilantro, and jalapeno on your own.
- Add cilantro and onion mixture to a large mason jar, I use a quart size (32 ounces).
- Pour the tomato sauce until it reaches about an inch from the top.
- Add seasonings, salt, cumin, and chili powder.
- Screw on the mason jar lid and shake until well combined. Use immediately or let it sit in the refrigerator until ready to use.
- Enjoy!

Hey San!! In the ingredients it says 1/2 large white tomato? Is that supposed to read onion?
LOL! Yes, thanks for catching that.

Any salsa using canned tomatoes needs to be thrown in the trash. Periodt. If you want 5 minutes salsa, go buy some.
Have fun with your store-bought salsa. You’re missing out but I don’t care more canned tomatoes for the rest of us.
